\n\n\nThe electronic data interchange for administration, commerce and transport, or EDIFACT standard for electronic data interchange (EDI) is an international standard widely used throughout Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
It provides a set of rules that facilitates the standardised exchange of multicountry and multi-industry electronic messages used in business. Some of the most common message examples are invoices and purchase orders. Transactions through EDI are abbreviated to EDI transaction codes that correspond to a specific type of electronic business document, such as an invoice or purchase order.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These EDI messages can be exchanged with trading partners such as suppliers, distributors or retailers, as well as other third parties. Each EDI message uses a format called a transaction set because it includes a set of data components in a precise order and format. The data required for each individual EDI message changes depending on the type of message being exchanged. Each EDI transaction code contains one or more data elements, such as a price or phone number.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
EDI enables two businesses to exchange standardized business messages with each other. It’s the uniformity within EDI standards that keeps the order and format of the data consistent and enables the receiving EDI system to correctly interpret the data from the sending company. The message contains a variety of information that is used by the recipient to alter future output or manufacturing production. A functional acknowledgement acts as an automatic audit trail so the company is aware if their message has been received and adds accuracy to the trading partner communication process\u00a0<\/p>\nProduct Inquiry (PROINQ) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The product inquiry message enables a buyer to inquire on a product or group of products from a master product catalogue according to criteria defined in the message. The buyer can specify the product they are interested in within the message. This allows the manufacturer and\/or supplier to send the buyer information for the specific products that the buyer is interested in, rather than the entire product catalogue.\u00a0<\/p>\nPurchase Order Change message (ORDCHG) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n A purchase order change request is sent from a buyer to a seller when the buyer needs to make changes to their EDI Purchase Order. This electronic data interchange message helps streamline trading partner communication, so changes can be tracked and made easily.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0ORDCHG messages provide the information required for a purchase order change. This transaction can be used by a buyer to request a change to a previously submitted purchase order, or by a buyer to confirm acceptance of a purchase order change initiated by the seller.\u00a0<\/p>\nDespatch Advice (DESADV) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The Despatch Advice is sent by the supplier or warehouse to the buyer as confirmation that their order is on its way and contains important shipping information. The DESADV typically serves as a follow-up to the order response (ORDRSP) message and indicates that the order will be delivered on time and as promised. Another name for a despatch advice is an Advanced Shipping Notice, or ASN.\u00a0<\/p>\nSales Forecast Report (SLSFCT) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The sales forecast report message is sent from a seller and facilitates the transaction of sales forecast data related to a product or service. It allows the recipient to automatically process the data and use it for business purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\nReceiving Advice (RECADV) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n This message enables the buyer to confirm the physical receipt of goods once a delivery has arrived. It also enables the buyer to report discrepancies in products, quantities and packages etc. Sellers can use this information to adjust further deliveries and account for any errors from previous shipments.<\/p>\nRemittance Advice (REMADV) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The remittance advice is used to notify buyers when a fee is owed for the goods or services they have received. Trading partners use this to make a payment, send a remittance advice, or make a payment and send a remittance advice. The REMADV is useful when combining multiple invoices into a single payment as it helps identify which invoices are included within the transaction.<\/p>\nRequest for Quotation (REQOTE)<\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The request for quotation message is transmitted by a buyer to supplier to request a quotation for products or services. The request for quotation may also be used to solicit the supplier’s payment terms and conditions, and to specify the required quantities, dates and delivery locations.\u00a0<\/p>\nPurchase Order Response message (ORDRSP) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The purchase order response message is a message from the seller to the buyer, responding to a purchase order message or a purchase order change request message. It is used to acknowledge the order and confirm that the supplier can meet the contents of the order and supply the products\/services.\u00a0<\/p>\nInvoice (INVOIC) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n An EDI invoice is sent by a seller to a buyer to indicate the charges due and request payment according to agreed-upon terms. This EDI transaction can be used instead of sending a paper, email or PDF invoice. The document confirms that the order has been delivered, and requests payment from the buyer to close out the order.\u00a0<\/p>\nInventory Report (INVRPT) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The inventory report message enables a trading partner to update another party on inventory levels and inventory changes.\u00a0<\/p>\nPrice Catalogue (PRICAT) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n The price catalogue message is used by manufacturers and suppliers to ensure trading partners have the most up to date product and pricing details. This message is often sent periodically and offers product and price information for a range of items.\u00a0<\/p>\nProduct Data (PRODAT) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n This message provides product identifications and descriptions for the full range of goods the supplier offers to its customers. It might be offered to a single customer or a multitude of customers. The information enables customers to select goods according to their requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\nReceiving Advice (RECADV) <\/a>\nExpand<\/i><\/a>\n This transaction specifies details for the goods received by the buyer from the seller. The message informs the seller which products were delivered\/not delivered against the original order, and if any items were not accepted. This informs the seller to prepare an invoice for the buyer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\nRessource EDIFACT Guide\n<\/a>\n EANCOM is a sub-element of the EDIFACT standard and was developed in 1987. EANCOM is a recognised industry standard developed for the retail industry.
