Safeway is a leading U.S. supermarket chain with stores in the United States and abroad. It started as a small grocery store in American Falls, Idaho, in 1915, founded by S.M. Skaggs, and is now headquartered in Pleasanton, California.
By 1926, Skaggs had opened 428 stores in 10 states. Backed by investment firm Merrill Lynch, the Skaggs company was then incorporated to buy the 322-store Safeway grocery chain founded by Sam Seelig. Today, Safeway operates more than 900 stores across 18 states in the United States as a banner of Albertsons Companies, one of the largest food and drug retailers in the US.

Safeway operates as its own VAN in much the same way as many public VANs. It does not employ a VAN to store and forward EDI data but still communicates with most primary VANs that our trading partners utilize.
Once you have set Safeway up as a trading partner in your system and Safeway has done the same for your company, you can request test purchase orders and invoices to be reviewed and verified. Safeway requires functional acknowledgments to be sent back for every transaction sent, and the trading partner must accept and acknowledge the 824 application advice transactions to move them to production.
