What is EDI 864?

EDI 864 is an electronic data interchange transaction set that replaces an e-mail, fax, or phone call. It is used by a variety of suppliers, manufacturers, 3PLs, retailers and other supply chain partners to send free form text. While EDI 864 is mostly used for one-time communications, some companies choose to use it as a standard communication method.

EDI 864 documents follow the x12 format set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), a not-for-profit organization that regulates EDI formats in the U.S.

What are the Essential Components of EDI 864?

Because of the flexible nature of EDI 864, this EDI document does not contain much standardization. Commonly 864’s will include:

  • Message Date & Time
  • Sender & Receiver Identification
  • Free-Form Message Text

How Do I Use EDI 864?

EDI 864 may be used in a variety of communication situations. For example, EDI 864 may be used to communicate new store or distribution center openings, changes to operational hours, or any other informative business details.  EDI 864 can be used to communicate errors in other EDI documents, such as data inaccuracies or price discrepancies.

What are the Benefits of EDI 864?

Like other EDI documents, EDI 864 offers supply chain trading partners a safe and secure way to communicate with one another, while protecting sensitive business details. EDI 864 also helps to streamline communication and may be used to record communications between trading partners for enhanced visibility into the business relationship.
